mak·si·muh·liz·um | noun | Design & Aesthetics
The design philosophy that more is more. Where minimalism strips away, maximalism layers pattern on pattern, color on color and object alongside object, creating spaces that are rich, personal and unapologetically full. Long rooted in African and diasporic aesthetics, maximalism is having a cultural reckoning as the design world catches up to what Black homes have always known.
Origin: Derived from the Latin maximus, meaning greatest. The design application of the term emerged as a direct cultural counterpoint to minimalism in the late 20th century, though the aesthetic itself has roots in African, Victorian and Baroque traditions far predating the label.
