The Subtle Start of Summer

Salty air, bare feet and loose plans. The real start of summer shows up in small moments that welcome a moment of respite alongside the people, places and things that matter.

By ashleigh mckenzie

Spring quietly slides into summer, usually before the astronomical date makes it official. School’s still in session, the camp forms are still sitting in an inbox, the vacation is still awaiting confirmation, yet somehow it already smells and feels like summer outside. It creeps in as the porch light starts to be cut on later and the day’s light lingers longer. The switchover is subtle as the oven is ignited less and every recipe starts to involve a grill with the electronic bug swatter at the ready in your free hand.

This is the season that runs on vibes, the best parts of which rarely show up on a calendar. The playlist reflects decades of joy, movement and resilience, doing the work of throwback DJ and creative educator for the youth. So here’s to the unofficial kickoff, and a reminder to show up, stay a little longer, and to kick back and let the season do what it does best.

A few things we’ve been reaching for as the season shifts:

  • The playlist – a little Frankie Beverly because it’s always a good choice for any mood, some Will Smith from his pre-Oscar slap days to Burna Boy and Cardi B.
  • The porch – flowers spilling over the railing, and your chairs pulled a little closer together.

  • The beach bag – a perfect place for a statement, one that highlights who you are and what you stand for. Also good for holding all the things.
  • The bug swatter – not just a swatter, a functional art piece from ER Studio. A non-negotiable once the sun goes down, right next to the Porch Light candle from FSB that sets the mood.

However it shows up for you, summer is already here. Cut the porch light on, pull up a chair and stay awhile.
