About Color
Every screen shows color a little differently. (Remember the blue-or-gold dress?) For a truer look, turn your brightness up, switch off night mode or any blue-light filter, and check it in daylight if you can.
Why we always say get a sample first:
- See the scale. A sample shows how big the pattern really is, or how strong the color reads, against your actual space.
- Feel it. Texture changes how a room looks, feels and holds up. Touch it before you commit.
- Watch the light. Put it where it’ll live and look at it morning, noon and night. Daylight and lamps can make the same color look totally different.
Ask us for a sample or swatch first. It adds a few days, but it’s the best way to know you’ll love it, and it saves you the hassle of a return.
Good to Know
- Made to order, just for you. It’s built after you order, so allow a few weeks before it ships.
- See the fabric first. Ask us for swatches before you order.
- 48 hours to cancel. After that it may be in production. Made-to-order pieces are final sale.
- One-year limited warranty on how it’s made. Normal fabric wear isn’t covered.
Shipping & Returns
Sold and shipped by Empyrean Roots. In-stock pieces usually ship within a few business days. Made-to-order and custom pieces take longer, and big or fragile pieces may ship by freight. We’ll email you tracking once it ships.
Returns. Most in-stock pieces can be returned if they’re unused and in their original packaging. Made-to-order, custom and Final Sale pieces can’t be returned.
Magalene Wilson
For more than fifty years, Magalene lived and quilted in a project house in Pettway, piecing and quilting every one herself. Her neighbor Loretta Pettway remembered her curved lines, small rows and short stitches, plus her love of church, her cats and a spotless yard. She never had children of her own, but she helped raise Loretta’s kids and grandkids. The quilt on our pieces is her One Patch Quilt (c. 1950).
Gee’s Bend is a small, mostly Black community in a bend of the Alabama River in Wilcox County, Alabama. For generations the women there have made quilts from whatever they had on hand, like work clothes and feed sacks, and passed the craft down from mothers to daughters and from neighbor to neighbor. Today those quilts hang in museums around the world, but the tradition belongs to the whole community. More than a hundred Gee’s Bend quiltmakers are on record, and the women we carry are only a few of them.
