About the maker

Mary Lee grew up watching her mother quilt, but it was her aunt Louella whose work she looked up to most. She tears old, worn-out clothes into strips and blocks and pieces them into bold, geometric quilts, and she’s said she never went by a pattern. One of her Housetop quilts was put on a U.S. postage stamp in 2006, and in 2015 she received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her work is in MoMA, the National Gallery of Art and Tate Modern. The quilt on our pieces is her Work-Clothes Quilt (2002).

About Gee’s Bend

Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective

Gee’s Bend is a small, mostly Black community in a bend of the Alabama River in Wilcox County, Alabama. For generations the women there have made quilts from whatever they had on hand, like work clothes and feed sacks, and passed the craft down from mothers to daughters and from neighbor to neighbor. Today those quilts hang in museums around the world, but the tradition belongs to the whole community. More than a hundred Gee’s Bend quiltmakers are on record, and the women we carry are only a few of them.

This room started with North Star, 2023 by Corinne Slade. We pulled the warm, layered tones from the painting, wrapped the walls in a soft olive and peach print, and layered in our first ER Studio velvet sofa, a Gee's Bend quilted ottoman and a lounge chair made to live anywhere.

This room started with Sisters Back by Charly Palmer. We pulled the deep blues and warm browns right out of the painting, put a bold print on the walls, and filled it with soft, rounded pieces you'll want to sink into.
